On March 22, 2024, Dollar Tree announced the closure of 1,000 Family Dollar stores, with 600 of them closing in the first half of the year. In Peoria, the two stores identified are located at 3116 N. Sterling Ave and 820 NE Jefferson St.

These closures couldn't come at a worse time for the North Valley neighborhood, which already faces a shortage of large grocery stores. With Family Dollar's departure, the community is left with even fewer options for food and everyday essentials.
